The lone impact player left after the Miami Marlins complete tear down, catcher J.T. Realmuto's 2018 season will now get off to an even worse start. The 27-year-old will begin the year on the 10-day disabled list as he continues to build his way to game action after he suffered a back injury early in spring training.
Realmuto first suffered the back injury back on March 12 and never made it back to game action as the calendar drew closer to March 29. Ultimately, after initial optimism from Realmuto that he would be behind the plate when Miami opened the season, the Marlins played things cautiously with their best trade asset and placed him on the disabled list.
Fantasy owners should see Realmuto activated and back on the field at some point in April. Until his return, expect 26-year-old Tomas Telis to draw the majority of starts at catcher. The 26-year-old, switch-hitting catcher played in 48 games last season with Miami. Across 111 plate appearances, Telis posted a .240/.279/.346 slash line with only nine RBIs and zero home runs or stolen bases. He is not someone fantasy owners should consider in even the deepest leagues.
Upon Realmuto's concern, the veteran's talent alone will be the driving force behind his fantasy value. A consensus top-six catcher in fantasy, Realmuto's short absence will deliver a slight blow to his fantasy stock but it shouldn't be anything that dramatically influences his ADP or ranks amongst catchers. For fantasy owners in need of a backup plan at catcher until Realmuto returns, consider Austin Hedges, Tucker Barnhart or Chris Iannetta.
