In the midst of a strong season that has put them near the top of the baseball standings, the San Francisco Giants will be without right fielder Hunter Pence for two-plus months after the team announced on Friday that the star right fielder will require surgery on his hamstring.
Pence initially strained his hamstring on May 22 and was held out of the lineup on May 28. Then on June 1, he slowed down while running down the first-base line and immediately grabbed at his hamstring. He was immediately ruled out for an extended time by the Giants, but details on his injury did not come out until today.
His severe injury will result in surgery and while the initial table for his return is in late-August, the team and Pence have been made aware that the recovery could take longer. San Francisco will be without a cog in its lineup who was hitting .298 with seven home runs, 36 RBI's and a .375 on-base percentage this season.
Until Pence returns, San Francisco will explore outfield options on the trade market while relying on a platoon of Mac Williamson, Brandon Belt, Kelby Tomlinson and Jarrett Parker in left field until Angel Pagan returns, then Pagan, Parker and Gregor Blanco will split time in right and left field.
