The Kansas City Royals on Sunday placed All-Star catcher Salvador Perez on the 10-day disabled list with a right intercostal strain, an injury that will almost assuredly keep him out the minimum.
Perez suffered the injury on Tuesday and attempted to play through it, but said attempt was unsuccessful.
This is some pretty bad news for a Royals team that's currently three games out of first in the AL Central and currently holds the second wild card spot in the league.
Perez, 27, has earned five consecutive All-Star appearances and is in the midst of the best season of his career. He's hitting to a .278 average with an .817 OPS. He's also hit 21 homers, driven in 65 runs and boasts 42 extra-base hits on the season.
Needless to say, Perez has been one of the top fantasy catchers in the game. With him out of action for at least the next 10 days (likely longer), Drew Butera and Cam Gallagher will platoon behind the backstop for Kansas City. Neither provides much from a fantasy standpoint.
