The Arizona Diamondbacks will be without starting pitcher Shelby Miller until well into next season after the veteran announced on Sunday that he plans on undergoing Tommy John Surgery on his injury throwing arm.
UCL tears that require this surgery usually tend to lead to a year-plus of rehab, which will likely push Miller's return into the second half of next season. Miller departed Arizona's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers late last week after feeling pain in his throwing elbow.
It was reported that he had a UCL tear on Saturday, but surgery itself wasn't confirmed until the following day.
Miller was pitching to a 4.09 ERA 1.46 WHIP in four starts this season prior to the injury. Acquired from Atlanta prior to last season, Miller had a disastrous first year in the desert, posting a 3-12 record with a 6.15 ERA in 20 starts. He's now out for the foreseeable future.
