In the midst of a slow start to the season, the Kansas City Royals sent down one of their young, early disappointments. Second baseman Raul Mondesi, who earned the second base gig after a productive spring training, is headed down to the minor leagues.
It had to be expected for Mondesi. The 21-year-old posted a .103/.167/1.79 slash line thus far in the 2017 season. While it's early, those results are dreadful. The failure to even have a .200-plus on-base percentage speaks to a player who was not ready for major league pitching. Kansas City tried to make it work and it failed miserably.
Long-term, Mondesi shouldn't be a major target in dynasty leagues. He never hit for any real power in the minor leagues, never stole 30-plus bases and that left him with an empty batting average. At second base, that just doesn't offer up enough fantasy upside.
With Mondesi out of the picture, Whit Merrifield and Christian Colon will split time at second base. Neither should be picked up off the waiver wire and are not going to be on the DFS radar for awhile.
