New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. What seemed like a minor injury that would keep him out for a couple weeks might very well be more serious than first imagined.
Harvey is reportedly considering season-ending surgery to fix a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome, which compression of nerves or blood vessels between the base of the neck and armpit can cause weakness and numbness in limbs, including arms.
That's about as scary as it gets for a pitcher in Major League Baseball. Should Harvey, who has already gone through Tommy John Surgery in his career, miss the remainder of the season, it would be a major blow to the Mets.
Harvey has struggled through the 2016 season, posting a MLB-leading 10 losses to go with a 4.86 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. This came on the heels of a three-year span that saw the ace pitcher boast a WHIP of under 1.10 and an ERA of 2.51.
We will provide updates as they become available.
