The Miami Marlins are completely out of playoff contention with less than two months remaining in the season. So it wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to see the team shut ace starter Jose Fernandez down for the remainder of the year after he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.
Fernandez, 23, complained of shoulder soreness during Miami's game against the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. While that was initially cause for alarm, considering Fernandez is just over a year removed from undergoing Tommy John Surgery, the diagnosis was a right bicep strain.
Not wanting to take any chances with their young hurler, the Marlins will likely take their time when it comes to his rehab.
In seven starts this season, Fernandez has posted a 4-0 record with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. He also boasts a solid 1.23 strikeouts per inning. Over the course of his two-plus seasons in the Majors, Fernandez has tallied a 20-8 record with a remarkable 2.26 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 43 starts.
