Michael Pineda Aims to Throw 200-plus Innings in 2016

As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2016 season, one key to making it back into the postseason will be a reliable, healthy rotation. Michael Pineda wants to be a part of that and has set a goal for himself to surpass 200 innings this season.

After being traded from the Seattle Mariners to the New York Yankees, Pineda ended up missing both the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He finally returned to the mound in 2014 for his new team and performed respectably considering the time he missed. Over 27 starts in 160 2/3 innings pitched, Pineda had a 4.37 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

Pineda struck out 156 batters with just 21 walks allowed but he did give up 21 home runs. The 27-year-old did show flashes of his old 2011 form, when he had a 3,74 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with the Mariners in 2011.

200 innings is a great goal for Pineda, given it would only be about a 40-50 inning bump from last season and it would obviously be a credit to him being healthy. If Pineda throws 200-plus innings in 2016, the Yankees should be in good shape.
