Who is the best baseball player in the game today? If your answer was anyone but Miguel Cabrera, you are dead wrong. He is fresh off of wininning the coveted Triple Crown Award and somehow is improving his game. He has the best batting average in baseball as of today at .373. He is second in the league in home runs behind only Chris Davis. He also has the most hits in all of baseball with 76 and is leading the league in RBIs with 57, which is 10 more than the second best. The fact that he is doing better than he did last year is simply remarkable.
It is the end of May so this is a bit premature, but if he can keep this up he has the chance to win back-to-back Triple Crowns. The fact that back-to-back and Triple Crown are even in the same sentence is impressive. To put all of this into perspective, let’s look at a few more stats. Cabrera is on pace to bat .373, score 140 runs of his own and drive in a ridiculous 198 men. If he can keep up at this torrid pace he, would become the first player in history to actually improve upon his prior triple crown numbers.
The 198 RBIs is a very exciting statistic in it’s own right. If he could put up this mind-blowing number he would become the single season leader for RBIs. The current single season RBI holder is Hack Wilson who did it in 1930 and drove in 191. The best part is that we all have a front row seat to watch one of the best to ever do it.
There was a lot of questions about Cabrera starting off the 2011 season because he was arrested for DUI. Some “experts” were saying he wasn’t disciplined and had a drinking problem. He has put all of that aside and is now the face of Major League Baseball. The regular season is about a third of the way through and we have yet to see Cabrera slump. The final question is, can he actually keep up at this pace?
If this was any other player besides Cabrera I would say no, but the fact that it is Miguel makes me believe we could be watching something really special unfold in front of our eyes. Yes, he will eventually have a slight slump at some point in the season, but how bad do you think that slump will be? My guess is over a two or three week period he will only bat about .260 and hit only two or three home runs. The question from there would be; is that even a slump?
For now, lets all sit back and really appreciate what we are witnessing. It is not everyday that you get to watch a player with such a high ceiling dominate from beginning to end. The best part about of all this is that he has never been brought up in steroid accusations which is awesome. Here’s to you Miguel Cabrera, I for one hope you can reach these goals and sincerely believe that you will.
