It is finally here! Regular season baseball starts Sunday night when the Texas Rangers host the Houston Astros. This may not be the most exciting baseball game of the year but it is historic. This game will mark the first time in history that the Houston Astros will play as an American League team.
Last night worked as a teaser for all you baseball fans out there until this morning when the real opening day begins. Of the 12 games airing today, five really stick out above the rest. Four of the five games played are between division rivals with a lot of exciting pitching matchups.
Here it is, the five most intriguing opening day matchups.
5. Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
I understand that the Red Sox and Yankees are far from the teams they were five years ago but this game had to make the list. The most historic rivals in all of baseball square off in the first of 18 regular season games. This game losses a bit of its spark due to the massive amount of injuries on the Yankees squad. Overall, this game should be interesting from the historic aspect. The pitching matchup will feature Jon Lester and CC Sabathia. Lester needs to prove himself this season and what better way to do so than to beat the Yankees? Meanwhile, Sabathia will look to continue pitching at the highest level. PREDICTION: Red Sox- 6 Yankees- 4
4. Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics
What a pitching matchup we have here. The away team will send out their Cy Young candidate in Felix Hernandez while the Athletics call to Brett Anderson. Any game that is being played within the division always holds a bit more meaning. Obviously every game matters but winning division games early will pay off in the dog days of summer. Look for Yoenis Cespedes to lay the lumber, while Michael Morse will be donning his brand new Mariners jersey. PREDICTION: Mariners- 1 Athletics- 3
3. Philadelphia Phillies vs Atlanta Braves
One of the most interesting games of the night is right here. The story behind this game is cool. The Phillies are getting older and the chance to win a world series is slowly falling from their grasp. The Braves on the other hand are a brand new looking team with no Chipper Jones in the lineup. The pitching matchup will feature to veteran guys in Cole Hamels and Tim Hudson. This game is extra important to Hudson since he announced the 2013 season will be his last. This game has all the pieces to become the game of the night. PREDICTION: Phillies- 2 Braves- 5
2. Los Angeles Angels vs. Cincinnati Reds
Yes, you read that correctly. The Angels play the Reds making this the first time in history that an American League team has played a National League team on opening day. This will now be the new normal as interleague games will be played throughout the entire year. The pitching matchup in this game is another exciting one. Angels, Jered Weaver will face off against the Reds ace, Johnny Cueto. The headlines just continue here in this matchup as Josh Hamilton will be rocking an Angels uniform for the first time in regular season. There will also be some kid named Mike Trout playing. Keep your eye out for this game. PREDICTION: Angels- 6 Reds- 5
1. San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
The world series champs have to be in the one spot here right? Yes, because this is by far the best game of the day especially if you like pitching. This matchup will feature Cy Young winner, Clayton Kershaw versus two time world series champion Matt Cain. The best part about this game is the fact that these teams will be battling for the one spot in the NL West all year long. You will also get to see beast mode for the first time all year in Matt Kemp. Do not miss this game under any circumstances. You might just witness an instant classic. PREDICTION: Giants- 2 Dodgers- 1
