For my first foray into the fray that is daily fantasy baseball, a solid slate of division matches make up the majority of the field of play. By exploiting rivalry games, it can be much easier to predict a winner. Remember, edraft offers a 100% donation bonus on fanduel.com so be sure to get your daily fantasy fix thereabouts. So here we go:
Pitcher
Ervin Santana Braves, $6,500
While Wandy Rodriguez up against the Cincinnati Reds putrid offense is not a bad choice, the former Astros’ fire-baller has not played up to form yet this season. Therefore, Ervin Santana against the remnants of a once-great Phillies team is the way to go. Santana has yet to allow a run in eight innings pitched on the year, and had 65 of his 88 pitches fall in for strikes in a win against the Mets. Recently recalled from Triple A, Santana has a chip on his shoulder and will look to continue his domination against a mediocre offense in Philadelphia.
Catcher
Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers, $3,600
What may be the only reliable catching option today, Jonathan Lucroy is the Brewers’ face of franchise, and enters this division match up scorching hot. Batting .357 on the season with one home run, two runs batted in and a .426 on base percentage, Lucroy is a steal at $3,600 and should be an instant plug and play in your lineups tonight. Six of Lucroy’s 15 hits this season have been doubles, so consider Lucroy a high-reward low-risk option at catcher.
First Base
Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks, $4,400
This is where we spend the money, or gold in this case. Arguably the best first baseman in the game today, Goldschmidt faces Mets’ staple of mediocrity: Zach Wheeler who’s ERA stands at 5.73 and is winless in two starts. Goldy should eat big in this one entering the contest with two homeruns and nine runs batted in to complement his two stolen bases and .317 average.
Second Base
Chase Utley, Phillies, $3,900
Utley is simply the best hitter in baseball thus far on the year, posting a .500 average on top of three dingers, 10 RBI, five walks, and eight runs scored. As long as the Phillies’ second basemen is hitting at this clip, he is a must-play option in your daily leagues.
Third Base
Josh Donaldson, Athletics, $3,500
Though he does not get it done in the batting average department, Donaldson can score points in a variety of ways including three doubles, three RBI and three home runs on the season. As the heart of the Athletics’ order, Donaldson should continue to provide pop for the league’s premier small-ball franchise.
Shortstop
Chris Owings, Diamondbacks, $2,800
Saving up for our outfield spending spree, Owings’ is a cheap option that already has four steals on the season and has the luxury of a Goldschmidt in the lineup to get him home. Save up for outfield spending and buy low with Owings in a beneficial matchup.
Outfield
Domonic Brown, Phillies, $3,000
Off to a slow start, Brown will eventually come out of his slump and faces a favorable opponent on the mound tonight in the right-handed Ervin Santana. While Santana should stifle the majority of Phillies batters tonight, the left-handed Brown alongside Utley should get to Santana at some point, even if the team as a whole struggles.
Nelson Cruz, Orioles, $3,100
Adding some power to the lineup, Cruz has gone yard twice in 2014, and plays in the friendly confines of Camden Yards in Baltimore tonight. Its not David Price on the mound for the Rays, so play Cruz with confidence at this bargain of a price tag.
Jay Bruce, Reds, $3,500
The lone bright spot in a lineup with less energy than Elmer Fudd after rabbit season, Bruce has tallied 11 walks in 39 at bats. Up against Wandy Rodriguez, Bruce should find a way to break the Reds’ offense out of its slump and get to the struggling Reds’ offense back on track.
