It has been a busy offseason to this point. There have been plenty of minor moves but there are also some big reports coming out concerning contract extension with one Giancarlo Stanton. An agreement has apparently been made with just the language of the contract to be worked out. Even though Stanton is not a free agent this puts a major blow into any ideas another team may have had about signing him in the future or trading for him.
The deal is reportedly worth up to $325 million over 13 years. This would be by far the most lucrative contract in baseball history, and Stanton is only 24.
With all the reports about the Giancarlo contract many of the other moves that have been made are being overshadowed. One such move is the trade the Diamondbacks just made with the Rays to acquire former rookie of the year Jeremy Hellickson.
Hellickson has struggled mightily the past two seasons but still owns a 3.78 ERA, and at the age of 27 he is in the middle of his prime and may be able to provide the Diamondbacks with some stability in their rotation.
Another pitcher made a little splash today. A.J. Burnett agreed to terms with the Pirates on a one year $8.5 million, which was $4.25 million less than he would have made with the Phillies if he didn’t turn down his option. Burnett enjoyed good success in Pittsburgh and looks to get back on track in his age 38 season after an abysmal stint with the Phillies.
Despite these moves perhaps the biggest move of the day was the Tigers inking veteran slugger Victor Martinez to a four-year, $68 million contract. Martinez finished second in the MVP voting this year and has been a force in the middle of the Tigers lineup when healthy.
