Most Dissapointing Fantasy Baseball Player at Each Position

Most Dissapointing Fantasy Baseball Player at Each Position

“What a bust, I am never drafting that guy again!” This is what a lot of fantasy owners are saying about certain players who performed far under expectations. Every single season there is certain players that you expect to do very well at any given position and for whatever reason they don't. Some of these players did have okay seasons but I am considering where they were drafted in my conclusion as well. This list is all of those players by position.

Catcher: Matt Wieters,  Baltimore Orioles
Average Draft Spot (ADP): Sixth Round

At the beginning of the season Wieters was ranked as one of the top seven catchers in all of baseball. Considering that he was being drafted in roughly the sixth round shows that he was highly over-valued. Sure he did hit 19 home runs which did rank third among catchers but his batting average was extremely low. His .229 batting average was not expected when his owners drafted him so early. His .229 average is the lowest in his career and the 19 home runs is the second lowest of his career, if you don’t count his first season in which he only played 96 games. This guy should still be considered a great fantasy baseball catcher next season as you can’t assume that the average will remain that low; as he is indeed only 27 years old.

First Basemen: Albert Pujols,  Los Angeles Angels
ADP: Late First-Early Second Round

I warned all of you of this man before the season started but most still did not listen. He was being drafted roughly SEVENTH OVERALL! Yes, you read that right, seventh! His batting average has been dropping for years now and it dropped once again this year. The .258 batting average ranks in the middle of all first basemen along with his 17 home runs which is worse than 12 others. The crazy thing is that he will be dropping lower and lower as the final month of the season is played out as he is out for the season with a foot injury. I am not one bit surprised by his performance this season and can guarantee this is the final year the Pujols will be drafted before the third round, ever again. Here is to you Mr. Pujols, we will never see a season like your 2009 again.

Second Basemen: Neil Walker,  Pittsburgh Pirates
ADP: 13th Round

The second basemen list of fantasy studs is shallow as it is. Dan Uggla could make this list but he wasn’t being drafted until the 15th round and leads all second basemens in home runs besides Robinson Cano. Walker was expected to have a good season as he is now 27 years old and in his fourth full season. He disappointed a lot of fantasy owners as he only hit nine home runs, drove in 40 men and batted .254 which is among the bottom third of all eligible second basemen. The fact that he is a second basemen plays to his advantage because of the lack of skill at that position. Howie Kendrick was being drafted two rounds later and put up the same numbers as far as home run and RBIs are concerned. Kendrick also hit for .300.

Shortstop: Starlin Castro  Chicago Cubs
ADP: Late Third-Early Fourth Round

Castro has arguably earned the worst draft pick of the season. He was being drafted in the third round, sometimes late second and has performed way under expectations. His career batting average is .280 and he even batted .307 in 2011. 2013 has easily been the worst season of his career. At this present time he is batting .239 with only seven home runs and 33 RBIs! The fact that these numbers are this low is insane. Among active shortstop Castro ranked third to last in batting average and third to last in RBIs. I can’t say I don’t blame you if you drafted Castro in the third round because of how awesome he played in his first three seasons. Look for him to have a much better 2014 and don’t give up on this guy as his potential is higher than Miley Cyrus at a club.

Third Basemen: Chase Headley,  San Diego Padres
ADP: Eighth Round

After a 2012 where Headley batted .286 with 31 home runs and 115 RBIs most thought getting him in the eighth round was a steal. Turns out it was a reach. 2012 was an amazing year for Headley as he took home a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger. He will not be receiving either of those this year as he has performed horribly. His .240 batting average is .46 points lower than last year and .28 lower than his career average. He also didn’t come close to hitting 20 home runs; in fact, he hasn’t even reached double digits in home runs with eight. The worst part for Headley is that he was in a contract year and could have been looking at a very large sum of money if he put up numbers even close to 2012. There was a reason why he dropped so far in the draft and we are seeing why this season.

Outfielder: Yoenis Cespedes,  Oakland Athletics
ADP: Late Fourth-Early Fifth Round

Cespedes is a lot like Headley as far as fantasy numbers are concerned. His 2012 was spectacular with 23 home runs, 82 RBIs and a batting average of .292. His 2013 has been a lot different. The power numbers seem to still be there as he has 20 home runs but the batting average has plummeted. His .227 average just doesn’t cut it when he is being drafted in the fourth round. Sure, you are getting decent home run numbers but there is a whole lot of outfielders who were drafted a lot later and are putting up way better numbers than him. This is only his second season in the bigs and he may be going through a sophomore slump so don’t give up on this guy for 2014.

Pitcher: R.A. Dickey,  Toronto Blue Jays
ADP: Sixth Round

Once again this is a guy that I warned everyone about. He is a knuckleball pitcher and he is 38 years old. The fact that people were drafting him in the sixth round is unreal and slightly embarrassing. His 4.39 ERA ranks in the bottom 30 of all starting pitchers and his 29 home runs allowed is tied for second in all of baseball. For those of you who drafted Dickey and expected him to have a repeat performance of 2012, shame on you. This guy is like any other knuckleballer, it is a rollercoaster of ups and downs and certainly not worth the risk of a sixth round pick.
