New York Yankees Set to Acquire Alfonso Soriano

On the heels of trading Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers on Monday, the Chicago Cubs appear on the verge of sending Alfonso Soriano to the New York Yankess in a twist of fate for the veteran power hitter.

If Soriano waives his no-trade clause, which was enacted last year when Chicago attempted to ship him to the San Fancisco Giants, he'll be an important addition to an injury-plagued Yankees roster. The 37-year-old outfielder has hit 17 homers and driven in 51 runs this season for the Cubs. Both numbers would rank second on the Yankees behind All-Star Robinson Cano

Soriano has nearly $25 million remaining on his contract, which is set to expire following the 2014 season. It is believed that the Cubs head honcho Theo Epstein is willing to pick up a majority of that remaining salary.

It has been long believed that Chicago would need to pick up a lot of money in order to move that contract.

A report from The New York Post indicates that Chicago would receive a mid-level prospect in return for Soriano. While those players rarely pan out in the majors, the bigger win here for the Cubbies would be to rid themselves of some that $25 million owed to the veteran over the next year plus.

In addition to dealing Garza away to Texas, the Cubs have sent Scott Feldman packing to Baltimore and Scott Hairston to Washington this month.

At the very least, Epstein is salvaging a lost season by acquiring both payroll flexibility as well as top-tier prospects (see the Garza trade) for the future.

New York, who has seen a combined four homers and 14 RBIs from Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira this season, needed to add a solid bat to the lineup in order to compete in the difficult AL East.

Joe Girardi's club currently sits five games over .500 and in fourth place in the division; seven games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.
