Oakland A's Acquire Yonder Alonso in Four-Player Swap with the San Diego Padres

You can't say that the Oakland Athletics have not been active during the early stages of the offseason. The team acquired first baseman Yonder Alonso and reliever Mark Rzepczynski from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-handed pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Jose Torres.

Oakland has been attempting to remake its infield this offseason. The trade for Alonso comes just a week after the team re-acquired Jed Lowrie from the Houston Astros.

Once considered one of the top prospects in baseball, Alonso has not seen the top-end power expectations translate to the Majors. He hit .282 with five homers, 31 RBI's and a solid .361 on-base percentage last season.

Alonso, 28, will likely take over the role we saw Ike Davis in with the A's last season. Davis was not tendered a contract by Oakland on Wednesday.

His splits are rather interesting and could indicate that Alonso is prepared to put up better numbers in 2015. This past season saw Alonso hit .309 with a .407 on-base percentage on the road compared to a .254/.309 split at the pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

Rzepczynski, 30, should help remake what was a horrible bullpen in Oakland last season. He posted a disastrous 7.36 ERA in 27 appearances with the Padres after being acquired from the Cleveland Indians during the season. Though, the reliever did post a solid 2.74 ERA with 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings for the Indians back in 2014.

Heading to San Diego is the deal is a former top-five pick in Pomeranz, who is still just 25 years old and has plus-level stuff. The veteran posted a 3.66 ERA in 53 appearances (nine starts) last season. He also tallied a solid 1.19 WHIP with 82 strikeouts in 86 innings.

This came after Pomeranz posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 20 appearances (10 starts) for Oakland in 2014.

The expectation here is that he will be slotted into San Diego's rotation.

Torres, 22, split time between two Single-A levels last season, posting a 2.56 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 84 in 77.1 innings.
