In a trade of two relatively underwhelming players, the San Diego Padres have dealt Jedd Gyorko to the St. Louis Cardinals for Jon Jay.
On the surface, it sure looks like St. Louis got the better end of this deal (imagine that).
Playing at a pitcher-friendly ballpark in San Diego, Gyorko has found a way to hit double-digit homers in each of his first three MLB seasons. He's coming off a 2015 campaign that saw him hit .247 with 16 homers and 57 RBI's.
Though, his high strikeout rate and low on-base percentage has to be a bit of a concern. Gyorko has struck out in over a quarter of his at-bats and boasts a horrendous .293 on-base percentage in his career.
The infielder did hit at a much higher clip away from PETCO Park last year, boasting a .262 average on the road compared to a .232 clip at home.
After putting up a .300 average in his first five seasons in the Majors, Jay saw his average dip to .210 in what was an injury-plagued 2015 campaign. It's unlikely that Jay's numbers are going to increase much playing half of his games in San Diego, but he's proven himself to be a much better hitter than we saw last season.
