The Pittsburgh Pirates have found that lefty platoon bat to mix in with Michael Morse at first base next season. The team announced the signing of John Jaso to a two-year, $8 million contract on Wednesday.
Jaso, 32, played 70 games (primarily as a designated hitter) for the Tampa Bay Rays last season. He hit .286 with five homers and 22 RBI's while posting a solid .380 on-base percentage.
While Jaso has never really been a primary first baseman in his career, the expectation here has to be that he will platoon with Morse at that position. He simply has too many injury issues to play catcher and isn't a fit anywhere else on a National League team.
At the plate, Jaso seems to be a darn good signing. 172 of his 185 at-bats came against right-handed pitchers last season. Throughout his career, Jaso is hitting .274 with a .368 OBP against righties while putting up a .178/.309 split against left-handed pitchers.
