What we hoped was just a minor injury for Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jameson Taillon, is worse than anyone expected. On Monday, the Pirates announced the 25-year-old underwent treatment for suspected testicular cancer.
Tailon reportedly told the team's medical staff about an abnormality recently and after a consultation, Dr. John C. Lyne then performed surgery on the suspected testicular cancer.
The 25-year-old righty last pitched on May 3 against the Cincinnati Reds and on the season showed much of his promising potential. In six starts, Tailon posted a 3.31 ERA and 7.64 K/9 ratio. For Tailon, it was another step forward after a rookie season last year when he posted a 3.38 ERA and 7.36 K/9 in 18 starts.
The Pirates placed Tailon on the 10-day disabled list with groin discomfort over the weekend and pushed Trevor Williams into Taillon's spot in the rotation. Pittsburgh has issued no further update at this time on Taillon's status or his timetable for recovery.
Taillon joins Colorado Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis, who announced earlier this season he would undergo further chemotherapy after his cancer spread.
