The 2008 Cy Young winner Cliff Lee could potentially be seen wearing a new jersey by the time the All Star break swings around. The Philadelphia Phillies are currently 8.5 games out of first place, sitting in third place. Lee is set to make 25 million dollars this season and for the next two seasons after that. This is why it will be difficult for the Phillies to make a trade because it all depends on how much of his contract they are willing to “eat”. Lee’s agent is Darek Braunecker who is not the biggest named agent in baseball. Braunecker is also the agent for A.J. Burnett if that matters at all.
So the question remains where in the world will Lee end up. One of the main teams that keeps coming up in talks is the Texas Rangers. Ironically enough Lee played for the Rangers in 2010. The Rangers have a decent pitching staff at this moment in time with Yu Darvish pitching spectacularly. At this point in time it makes sense to see Lee go back to the Rangers.
Another team that could go after Lee is the San Francisco Giants. With Tim Lincecum pitching so poorly this year and Ryan Vogelsong on the DL this team is dieing for some starting pitching. In my opinion, this team seems to fit the best for him.
The final team that Lee could wind up on is the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles have decent pitchers but they don’t have that one ace who can set himself apart from the rest of the rotation. The Orioles are looking like a playoff team once again this season and the addition of Lee would provide dividends. Obviously these are all rumors at this point and we will have to wait awhile to find out where he will indeed end up.
