The MLB trade deadline will pass at 4 p.m. today, so let the chaos begin. Already today, Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes were dealt from the Boston Red Sox to the Oakland Athletics for Yoenis Cespedes, a move that came as a shocker, given the Athletics move for Jeff Samardzija earlier in the month.
The Red Sox also dealt John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly.
However, that’s the nature of the beast as the trade deadline nears. Teams will come quickly and add pieces many would have never guessed. There will be plenty of moves made today, but here are a few headlines to watch as we go forward.
Will David Price be traded?
The David Price saga has played out for over a month now; where the Tampa Bay Rays made Price available but continued to win, and slowly backed away from those statements. The Rays have won nine of 11 coming out of the All-Star break and stand just 5.5 games out of the second wild card.
That begs the question: Do the Rays have a good enough chance to make the postseason that they may keep Price? There certainly will be offers, especially from teams that lost out on Lester. The Rays could throw in the towel and deal Price for a slew of prospects or major league-ready youngsters.
However, the Rays could use Price’s 3.11 ERA and 11 wins if they decide to make a run at the postseason. It will come down to what kind of offers the Rays get and whether they feel they can make the postseason. The saga will continue up until the deadline.
Will the Philadelphia Phillies be active sellers?
By now, the Phillies are far out of the race for a NL playoff spot, so they have been rumored to be shopping many of their key players. Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd have all come up in trade rumors over the past few weeks.
However, the Phillies have been very quiet on whether they will actually pull the trigger on these stars. Teams will be calling the Phillies all day, but Philadelphia will need a deal that wows it to listen.
In terms of likeliness to leave Philadelphia, Byrd is high on the list and Hamels and Lee seem to be much less likely. With that said, a solid deal that could prepare the Phillies for the future could change all of that.
Will the Los Angeles Dodgers bulk up?
The Dodgers now lead the NL West by three games over the San Francisco Giants, but still seem to be looking for more. They have been in on discussions for Lester and Price, so pitching might be at the crux of where they want to improve.
However, with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu anchoring the rotation, they may not need to make a move to be successful. That won’t stop them from looking, though.
The Dodgers also have to figure out what to do with the hot Matt Kemp, who made it clear that he wants to be a full-time centerfielder. If they decide to trade Kemp, there could be a solid return. It will be a scary thought if the Dodgers do decide to add more pieces.
