A relatively full slate of MLB Opening Day games will take place on Monday, but the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees opened up the season Sunday afternoon in Tampa.
It was a brilliant performance from the young Rays, who tagged Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka for seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings. Evan Longoria led the onslaught with three RBI, including the first homer of the season. Meanwhile, first baseman Logan Morrison added three RBI's and a homer of his own in the 7-2 win.
From a pitching perspective, Chris Archer went seven strong, yielding seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
The young Yankee foursome of Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Aaron Judge and Ronald Torreyes went a combined 2-for-15 with both of the team's RBI. As it relates to Sanchez and Bird atop the lineup, they reached base just once in 10 plate appearances. Learning curves, indeed.
