Just days after the Boston Red Sox welcomed back David Price to their rotation, they've now lost another starting pitcher. Eduardo Rodriguez landed on the disabled list Friday with a right knee injury.
Rodriguez suffered the knee injury during warmups before Thursday's start when he slipped and tweaked his knee. After being checked out by doctors, he took the mound for Thursday's game but his performance took a hit. He lasted just 5 2/3 innings on the day and surrendered seven earned runs, including four home runs, with eight hits allowed. His command and stuff seemed clearly impacted by the knee injury, leading Boston to make the move today.
While it would seem minor initially, this is the same knee that gave Rodriguez trouble last season and has provided issues for him in the past. So optimism takes a bit of a hit in Rodriguez's case and leaves some question about the chance he could miss more than two weeks with the injury. As of now, the Red Sox haven't provided a timetable for when he'll return to the rotation.
The likeliest candidate to be promoted and slide into the rotation is Brian Johnson. The 26-year-old southpaw threw a complete game shutout on May 27 against the Seattle Mariners, the first for complete game for a Boston pitcher this season, then promptly received a demotion to Triple-A with Price's near return. Now a spot could be there for Johnson to come up once again and try and follow up on his career-best start.
In seven starts at Triple-A Pawtucket this season, Johnson owns a 2.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 37/17 K/BB ratio in 44 2/3 innings. He's worth a stash in deep fantasy leagues, but doesn't offer enough upside for owners in 10 or 12-team leagues to add him.
