The Boston Red Sox could hardly sustain another blow to their starting pitching depth, but the hits kept coming on Thursday. Steven Wright is scheduled to undergo surgery on his knee and will miss the remainder of the 2017 season.
Wright dealt with soreness in his knee since spring training and tried to pitch through it. But with continued pain in his knee getting worse, Wright talked to the team and ultimately decided to undergo surgery to try to restore cartilage in the left knee and hope he can make a full recovery for next season.
This season, Wright allowed 22 runs in 24 innings pitched. It proved to be a rough going for the knuckleballer as he allowed 40 hits, nine of which were home runs, and just a 13/5 K/BB ratio in his limited work. His spot in the rotation will be filled by Kyle Kendrick, who is far off the fantasy radar.
