The New York Yankees have made their biggest signing of the young offseason. The large-market club has reportedly inked former Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann to a five-year, $85 million contract with an option for a sixth year that could make the deal worth $100 million.
McCann, who turns 30 in February, has hit 20-plus homers in each of the last six seasons and has earned seven trips to the All-Star Game. Mostly known for his offense, McCann has been a pretty darn good defensive catcher over the years. He's likely to remain at that position for at least the next few years before the Yankees move him to another position to keep his level of productivity up to par during the latter years of the deal.
The Yankees needed an upgrade behind the plate. Chris Stewart started a majority of the game behind the plate last season, hitting .211 with just four homers.
It remains to be seen if this deal indicates that the Yankees are no longer a serious suitor to retain Robinson Cano, who is said to be asking for over $300 million on the open market.
