Report: Tampa Bay Rays P Prospect Blake Snell Expected to Start Season in Triple-A

The Tampa Bay Rays organization has long been known to develop young pitchers and turn them into excellent starters. Names like David Price, James Shields and recently Chris Archer have all been phenomenal. Tampa Bay's top pitching prospect, Blake Snell, could be the next name to be amongst those heralded names.

But it seems Rays fans will be waiting a little longer with the report from the Tampa Bay Times that the 23-year-old lefty is expected to start the season in Triple-A Durham.

Snell had a breakout season between three levels in the minors last season. After throwing 21 innings of shutout ball in High-A, he was promoted to Double-A where he posted a 1.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 79/29 K/BB ratio in 12 starts. When Snell was promoted to Triple-A, he posted a 1.82 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 57/13 K/BB ratio over 44 1/3 innings pitched.

While Snell showed he might have major-league ready stuff to start in 2016, the logical move is for Tampa Bay to keep him in the minors for awhile. In Durham he can continue to work on his stuff and be even more prepared for his eventual call-up, plus Tampa Bay gets another year in contract control if he spends 20 days down in the minors.

The Rays will have a loaded rotation in 2016 with Archer, Jake Odorizzi, Drew Smyly, Erasmo Ramirez, Matt Moore and Alex Cobb on his way back. Tampa Bay is in a good situation rotation wise and can play it smart and economical with where they place Snell.

Snell is still worth drafting in re-draft leagues, though makes for a late round choice. Considered by many to be one of the top-15 best prospects in baseball, Snell has a bright future ahead of him and will contribute in Tampa Bay this season.
