In a flurry of roster moves on Monday, the Colorado Rockies sent outfielder Carlos Gonzalez to the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. While it isn't yet known how long Gonzalez will be sidelined, the shoulder is something that has bothered him for several games and ultimately reached the point that it required a trip to the DL.
For fantasy owners, Gonzalez's trip to the disabled list might be welcomed. The 31-year-old outfielder's 2017 season could be simply described as abysmal at the plate. In 277 plate appearances, Gonzalez hit six home runs, has just 20 RBIs and his .221 batting average and 51 wRC+ round out the lost season for the veteran. Even as the Rockies have enjoyed a breakout season where so many have done well and put up great numbers, the former All Star outfielder has turned into an automatic out in Colorado's lineup.
So Gonzalez's trip to the disabled list could be what everyone needs. Some time away from the game to get his 31-year-old body healthy, watch games and pitches from the dugout and have a week-plus to relax and get things back in gear. Because right now, the only thing keeping Gonzalez from being benched for the extended future is his name and a history of great production.
With Gonzalez sidelined, the door is opened for Raimel Tapia to see extended playing time. In 60 plate appearances this year, the 23-year-old owns a .273/.333/.345 slash line. What stands out is Tapia's speed and contact ability, drawing 60-grades as a prospect. Pair that with a spot in the Rockies' lineup, games in Coors Field and the opportunities, together it makes for an intriguing player worth adding in fantasy leagues.
