Rockies SS Jose Reyes Suspended through May 31

Major League Baseball announced on Friday that Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been suspended through May 31. Reyes, who was arrested on November 10 in Hawaii for domestic abuse against his wife, had been on administrative leave since the start of the season as the Rockies awaited his suspension.

While there were reports in the days and weeks leading up to the suspension that Reyes ban would be for 60-plus games, the total ban will run for just 52 games. Major League Baseball considered the 34 games he has already missed as time served, so Reyes has just 17 games remaining on his suspension.

The suspension is 22 games longer than New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman's 30-game suspension, the other domestic-abuse related suspension handed down this year.

The 32-year-old Reyes will not be able to play at any level until June 1, though it's expected he will not play another game for the Rockies. ESPN's Jayson Stark's believes Reyes has played his last game in Colorado with the belief that they "want no part of him."

While it may seem the market would be severely bare for a broken down shortstop with a large salary and domestic violence allegations, ESPN's Buster Olney reported this morning that there are teams interested in dealing for Reyes.

Reyes was due to make $22 million this season but lost $7.3 million of that amount because of the suspension. He is under contract for 2017 at $22 million and will cost a team $4 million to buyout his contract for the 2018 season.
