The hits keep coming for the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals. With Alex Gordon still sidelined to a broken wrist, the team was already missing one of their key cogs at the plate.
Now comes this unfortunate news surrounding third baseman Mike Moustakas, who has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.
The injury happened in a collision with Gordon on Saturday, the very same play that saw Gordon himself break his wrist. Talk about some bad luck right there.
Moustakas, 27, had just returned on Saturday after missing the past two weeks with a fractured thumb. He was hitting .240 with seven homers, 13 RBI and a .301 on-base percentage at the time of the injury.
With Moustakas out of action, youngster Cheslor Cuthbert will likely take over in the interim. He started on Thursday and has put up a .237 batting average in limited action this season.
Cuthbert is obviously not a fantasy option at this point. Instead, look for Kansas City to attempt to find a veteran replacement either in free agency or via a trade.
