San Francisco Giants Place Joe Panik on Disabled List

San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik has been among the best all-around infielders in the game this season. After coming on strong towards the latter part of the team's championship season last year, Panik has upped his game even more in 2015.

Unfortunately, that's all going to have to be put on hold after Panik was placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation on Monday.

This is a pretty big blow to a Giants team that is 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and currently tied with the Chicago Cubs for the final wild card spot.

Panik, an All-Star performer this year, is hitting .309 with seven homers and 35 RBI's. He's put up 34 extra-base hits, a .374 on-base percentage and a .816 OPS. A contact hitter, Panik has struck out just five more times than he's walked. Overall, he's hitting .348 in at-bats where the ball is put in play.

With Panik sidelined for the next two weeks, the Giants called up prospect Kelby Tomlinson, who will likely share second base duties with Ehire Adrianza. From a fantasy perspective, there isn't much to see here. You're much better off going with regular starters from other teams, especially on a DFS basis. Adrianza is hitting just .120 in 25 at-bats this season. Though, Tomlinson was hitting .321 with a solid .376 on-base percentage between Double-A and Triple-A when he was called up on Monday.
