Fresh off adding top-end starting pitchers Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija to their rotation earlier this offseason, the San Francisco Giants have filled a major hole in center field.
The team announced the signing of 31-year-old veteran Denard Span to a three-year, $31 million contract that can bring the total value up based on incentives.
Span played in only 61 games last season with the Washington Nationals due to injuries to his core muscles and a hip surgery. He did, however, hit .301 with five homers, 22 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
Span is a career .288 hitter and has reached the .300 plateau three times in parts of eight seasons.
The veteran's biggest impact will be his ability to get on base and steal that extra bag once he does. Span has posted a .358 on-base percentage over the past two seasons and boasts four seasons with 20-plus steals.
He's also seen as a solid defensive asset in center, which comes into play for the Giants at home.
