Tampa Bay Rays Acquire Corey Dickerson from the Colorado Rockies

In what was a pretty surprising late offseason deal, the Tampa Bay Rays have acquired outfielder Corey Dickerson and infield prospect Kevin Padlo from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for reliever Jake McGee and pitching prospect German Marquez.

Dickerson, 26, has been one of the Rockies most reliable bats over the past two seasons. He hit .304 with 10 homers and 31 RBI while posting a .869 OPS.

That came on the heels of the outfielder tallying a .312 average with 24 homers and 76 RBI's in 2014.

There is, however, a concern over how the left-handed hitter will perform away from Coors Field in Colorado — something that likely played a role in his decreased value on the trade market.

Over the course of his career, Dickerson has posted a .249 average with a .286 on-base percentage on the road. For comparison's sake, he's hitting .355 with a .410 on-base percentage at Coors Field.

That's the type of split that indicates the high elevation of Colorado played a major role in Dickerson's success in the past. That's only magnified by the fact that he tallied one homer for every 45 at-bats on the road compared to one per 16.7 at-bats at home.

It remains to be seen what role Dickerson will play in Tampa. The team already has its starting outfield set with Desmond Jennings, Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza left to right.

It's also important to note that Dickerson is a career .246 hitter against left-handed pitching — an indication that he might be in line for a platoon.

As it is, Colorado acquired a late-inning reliever in McGee who has been among the best lefties in the game in recent seasons. The 29-year-old posted a 2.41 ERA, 0.94 WHIP with an inflated 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings last season. It looks like McGee could be a favorite to close games with the Rockies until Adam Ottavino returns from Tommy John Surgery.

As it relates to the prospects being swapped, infielder Kevin Padlo goes to the Rays in the deal. He was a fifth-round pick of the Rockies back in 2014. Splitting time between low-level Single-A ball and Single-A Asheville last season, Padlo posted a .257 average with 11 homers and 53 RBI's.

Meanwhile, pitching prospect German Marquez goes from the Rays to the Rockies in the trade. The 20-year-old Venezuelan starter posted a 7-13 record with a 4.40 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 26 games (23 starts) for Single-A Charlotte last season.

Neither were considered top prospects prior to the deal.
