Texas Rangers sign Ian Desmond to One-Year Contract

The Texas Rangers swooped in late in free agency and grabbed one of the best bargains this offseason, signing Ian Desmond to a one-year deal. The contract will pay Desmond $8 million this season, far less than Desmond would have received had he accepted the Washington Nationals $15.8 million qualifying offer.

Desmond, who has been the Nationals' everyday shortstop since 2010, will now try his hand at left field for the Rangers. Desmond's willingness to be versatile and play different positions helped him in a market where the interest in him seemed to be limited.

It will be the first time in his major-league career that Desmond has played left field. His last outfield experience came in 2010 when he made one appearance in right field. Desmond made one appearance in right field in 2009 as well.

This will be a one-year "prove it" deal for Desmond and the situation should benefit him. Globe Life Park in Arlington is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball and should help aid Desmond's numbers. If he can show this year that he can handle himself adequately in left field along with good production at the plate, it should help Desmond cash in next offseason.

Texas will now surrender their first-round pick, 19th overall, as a result of signing Desmond. The move also signifies the team has serious concerns about Josh Hamilton's ability to stay healthy this season.
