Top 10 MLB Prospects Set to Make an Impact in 2014

10. Dylan Bundy Starting Pitcher - Baltimore Orioles

Bundy is the number one prospect in baseball according to scout.com, but after having Tommy John surgery before the 2012 season he may not be quite the prospect he once was.  It is more common today that a pitcher will bounce back from the ligament replacement surgery and be just as good, if not better, than he was before the surgery, but there is never any guarantee.  If Bundy comes back healthy he will be on the big league club, though, because they Orioles have struggled to get solid starting pitching, and if Bundy is the pitcher he was before surgery he could be the answer to the problem.

9. Jake Odorizzi Starting Pitcher - Tampa Bay Rays

Odorizzi is on the bubble right now as he sits behind a talented starting rotation in Tampa Bay, but with the rumors that former Cy Young award winner David Price will be traded a spot could open up for the 23-year-old starting pitcher.  He has only pitched in nine games at the big league level, six starts, and could be ready for his first big shot at the top level.  In seven appearances with the Rays in 2013 he only factored in one decision, a loss, but struck out 22 batters while only giving up eight walks.  While it will be tough for him to break spring training in the starting rotation, he will have a real shot at making an impact in 2014.

8. Travis d’Arnaud Catcher - New York Mets

d’Arnaud got a small taste of life in the big leagues in 2013 after being traded to the Mets for R.A. Dickey before the season, but he did not quite live up to the hype.  Even though he wasn’t quite what they had hoped for in his brief stint in the majors, he should break camp on the big league roster and could win the starting job.

7. Trevor Bauer Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians

Bauer at one point would have been at the top of a list like this, but personality issues and an inability to perform when given the opportunity at the major league level have dropped him down a bit.  With that being said, 2014 is going to be the year where Bauer either makes a name for himself or solidifies himself as a bust.  With the loss of Ubaldo Jimenez and Scott Kazmir to free agency, a spot has opened up in the Indians starting rotation and Bauer should be at the top of the list of candidates to fill the void.

6. Oscar Taveras Outfielder - St. Louis Cardinals

Taveras may not make the big league roster out of spring training, but thanks to the loss of Carlos Beltran via free agency he should get a shot to play in 2014.  In fact, if it weren’t for a high ankle sprain that cost him much of the 2013 season the Cardinals might not have felt inclined to make a trade with the Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos.  Taveras will get a shot in spring training to show how the ankle has healed and could very well break with the big league team.

5. Jonathan Villar Shortstop - Houston Astros

Villar spent the end of the season with the Astros as the starting shortstop and should get the opportunity to prove that the Astros did not make the wrong decision with Villar.  In 2013 he played in 58 games and stole 18 bases scoring 26 runs, proving that he can be a viable leadoff hitter, or bottom of the order speed guy.  What really makes him an impact player for the Astros is his strong defensive play, and paired with All-Star Jose Altuve, could be one of the best double-play duos in the league.

4. Tyler Skaggs Starting Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels

Skaggs has been traded back and forth between the Angels and the Diamondbacks, and now that he’s back in the Angels organization he will get a shot to start out the 2014 season in the rotation.  Skaggs will have a great shot to make an impact because the Angels had serious trouble with the starting rotation in 2013 and he will make the rotation straight out of spring training.  If he can cut down giving up home runs he can be an effective pitcher in the big leagues and he has already proven he can strike out batters.

3. Xander Bogaerts Shortstop - Boston Red Sox

Bogaerts got a short opportunity with the Red Sox at the end of 2013 and he must have impressed because the Sox appear to be ready to go with him over free agent Stephen Drew.  He showed quite a bit of power in the minor leagues, hitting an average of about 17 home runs, which is very valuable to a team that plays half of their games in a hitter friendly park like Fenway.  Unless the Red Sox decide to bring Drew back expect Bogaerts to get an opportunity at the major league level and make an impact for the defending World Champions.

2. Jurickson Profar Second Base - Texas Rangers

Profar got some time with the Rangers in 2013, 85 games to be exact, but in those games he was not an everyday player, and that seemed to hinder his production.  The Rangers seem to think he is ready to take the next step as they traded away incumbent starter at second base, Ian Kinsler, making Profar the starting second baseman by default.  Profar should break spring training as the starting second baseman and probably batting in the ninth position to give the team speed at the bottom of the order.

1. Billy Hamilton Outfielder - Cincinnati Reds

The speedster is set to make the biggest impact in 2014.  He got a short shot at the big league playing centerfield and he made the most of it.  He showed off just how he made his name in his short stint swiping 13 bases in 13 games while only getting caught once.  In 2014 he has the chance to make the biggest impact because he will be the starting centerfielder barring any big change in the remainder of the offseason.  If he can continue to perform the way he did in his short stint, not only will he make an impact, but he could very well lead the league and be the first person to steal 100 bases since Vince Coleman in 1987.
