Alex Reyes was expected to open the season as the St. Louis Cardinals fifth starter. Considered the Cardinals' top prospect, Reyes was absolutely tremendous in a brief cup of tea with the Major League club last season, posting a 1.57 ERA with 10-plus K's per nine innnings in 12 appearances (five starts).
Now, it looks like the 22-year-old Reyes is facing a long absence from the diamond. Reports on Tuesday suggested that the youngster suffered a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow. Tommy John Surgery seems likely at this point, but Reyes will get a second opinion.
Even if he doesn't need said surgery, we're looking at an extended absence here. If Reyes does indeed need to go under the knife, it's a 12-plus month long rehab proposition.
It now looks like veteran Michael Wacha will open the season as the Cardinals' No. 5 starter. After earning an All-Star appearance in 2015, Wacha struggled a great deal this past season, posting a 7-7 record with a five-plus ERA.
