It is now Week 23 of the Major League Baseball season which also means that it is the first week of the fantasy baseball playoffs. Some teams are competing in the playoffs while other teams are looking to win the “consolation championship”, also known as the first pick in next years draft. Regardless of what category you would fall into; everyone is always looking for the next best waiver pick-up. Below are some waiver-wire players that can become worth your time.
Starlin Castro, Shortstop, Chicago Cubs
Castro had a rough season, that’s for sure; but he could salvage some fantasy fans by heating up over the final month. He has been showing signs of his 2012 season as he went two for five with a home run and one RBI. He has a modest five game hitting streak working and is going to start heating up any time now. He is owned in about 70 percent of leagues so the chance of you getting him is a bit low. If he is there I say pick him up!
Eric Young, Outfielder, New York Mets
For about a month now the stock of Young has been going up. It is now skyrocketing as he is figuring everything out at the plate and on the base paths. He has six steals in the past seven games and has 12 hits in his last 30 at-bats. Those numbers alone should have you rushing to the free agent pool and snagging him up. If he continues to get on-base he is going to continue to steal bases, no one is stopping him.
Mark Buehrle, Starting Pitcher, Toronto Blue Jays
Now is a better time than ever to pick up Buehrle. He has been amazing in his past five starts allowing only seven runs in 34 innings pitched. Going back even further here but in his past eight games he has won six games. The strikeout numbers are not going to be ridiculously high but they also won’t be super low. You are looking at anywhere from five to nine k’s with this guy. The best part is that he is only owned in about 25 percent of leagues so the chance of him being yours is very possible. If you’re going into the playoffs; why not take a risk on a guy like this?
