The Toronto Blue Jays took another step to stabilize the back end of their rotation on Friday, signing J.A. Happ to a three-year, $36 million contract. Happ spent last season with the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates. He becomes the first free agent starting pitcher with 30-plus starts last season to sign a contract this offseason.
Happ made 20 starts for the Mariners in 2015 and struggled, registering a 4.12 Fielding Independent Pitching with a 1,41 WHIP and 10.0 H/9. The Pittsburgh Pitated acquired him on July 31 with hopes a change of scenery could help him turn things around. It turned out to be one of the best moves at the trade deadline as Happ registered a 2.19 FIP, 1.03 WHIP and 7.4 H/9 in 11 starts for the Pirates.
This will be Happ's second with the Blue Jays, having spent the 2012-'14 season with the team, making 58 appearances (50 starts). Over 291 innings, Happ registered a 4.39 ERA, while home runs ere really a problem for him in 2014 when he gave up 22 in 158 innings.
Happ will come in and provide more insurance at the back end of the Blue Jays' rotation, he should also be ahead of fellow Blue Jays offseason acquisition Jesse Chavez for a rotation spot. Happ was a nice fantasy pitcher in the second half of the season but his move to the Rogers Centre and his past history there makes him a fantasy question mark.
