Trout or Cabrera? Is Either Worth $50 in Auction?

Trout or Cabrera? Is Either Worth $50 in Auction?

When doing an auction draft it is important to bid on the best players as long as you realize every player has a limit that you should not exceed.  Sure it would be great to have Mike Trout or Miguel Cabrera on your team but don’t overpay on these two superstars or you will be hurting at the end of the draft when you can’t spend more than one dollar on players.

Mike Trout

Hands down the best player at his position, and one of the best players in all of baseball it’s easy for someone to say you should spend $50 on him, although that could be a move that ends up crippling your team.  Unless you are in a dynasty league, it is hard to justify spending that kind of cash on an outfielder. Trout provides great stats in every category, but he is an outfielder, which is a position of extreme depth.  In my opinion Trout is now worth $10 or more than Carlos Gonzalez.  Both are similar players, Trout has more speed, but Cargo has more power while both will have similar batting averages and RBI.  In an auction draft Trout could be going for $50 where as Carlos Gonzalez is going for sound $38.  When you compare the stats Trout is not $12 better than Cargo making it very unwise to spend that much money on Trout.  Use the money at a weaker position and help yourself out by building a better well rounded team with more bang for your buck.

Miguel Cabrera

Miguel Cabrera brings up an intriguing question as to his worth in an auction draft.  Unlike Trout, Cabrera plays a premium position, one in which once the top players are selected thins out very quickly.  When someone is playing a shallow position you need to spend a little bit more on him especially a player of Cabrera’s caliber.  Considering Cabrera is already going for around $47 in auction drafts if you have to spend the extra $3 he is worth it.  No third baseman was even close in production to Cabrera last year in any category other than steals, which is the one area Cabrera will not contribute to your team in.  Cabrera is the one exception to the rule as I would go all out and spend the $50 on him as there’s just no replacing the numbers that he is going to provide for your team.
