Well baseball fans, the wait is finally over and baseball season is upon us. Opening week has come and gone, but there have already been some great stories in the baseball world, as 2013 is shaping up to be a great season.
The season kicked off on March 31st as the Texas Rangers faced their new division rivals the Houston Astros. For one day the Astros were the best team in baseball and sat atop the AL West in first place. However, it didn't last as they faced Rangers ace Yu Darvish, who pitched a near perfecto in the biggest story of opening week. He was one out away from pitching the 24th perfect game in MLB history, but with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Darvish surrendered a base hit up the middle to Marwin Gonzalez. Darvish was then taken out of the game due to a high pitch count.
On opening day, 2012 National League rookie of the year, Bryce Harper started his season with a bang as he hit two homeruns against the Miami Marlins. The twenty-year-old outfielder continues to prove that he is the real deal.
Oakland A’s offseason acquisition infielder, Jed Lowrie has had a great start to this season. The shortstop position was a concern for the A’s, but Lowrie has stepped up to the plate and, so far, been a great asset to his team.
In their opening series against the Oakland A’s, the Seattle Mariners showed that they have the ability to be a team to be reckoned with this season. King Felix Hernandez showed why he was worth his new mega contract, and outfielder Michael Morse showed he is a real “Sea beast” as he hit four long balls in that series.
Taking a look at the AL East, the Baltimore Orioles first baseman/designated hitter Chris Davis is off to a hot start this season as he too has four homers to go with his 16 RBI’s. The Orioles will need him as they continue the season and contend in the tough AL East.
The defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants are off to a great start as their pitching has been phenomenal thus far; especially Barry Zito, who had a couple tough seasons, but has turned it around since the postseason.
It’s been about a week since the season began and some teams have come out swinging while others have gotten off to a slow start. There have been some great storylines this week, but none more impressive than that of the Rangers Darvish. A near perfect game in his first start of the season. This 2013 season has been impressive so far and should be a fun and exciting season full of amazing talent.
