Alexander Gustafsson Injured, Daniel Cormier Fights Jon Jones at UFC 178

Looks like one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history will have to wait, but fight fans will probably not be disappointed in plan B.

Suffering a knee injury during training, top light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson is out of his UFC 178 bout with Jon Jones and he will be replaced with undefeated former Olympian Daniel Cormier.

UFC.com announced the change on Wednesday and featured extensive commentary on the situation from “DC.”

“He (Jones) has to test his wrestling,” Cormier said. “If he doesn’t use his wrestling, he becomes very limited. That’s why the fight with Gustafsson was so close; he couldn’t use his wrestling.”

“So he has to try and use it. Is it going to matter? No. He’s not going to outwrestle me; that’s not ever going to happen. But he will test himself, even though I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference.”

Jones initially balked at the idea of rematching Gustafsson, an opponent he defeated via a narrow decision at UFC 165 in September.

Instead, he stated that he’d prefer a grudge match with Cormier, who boasts a perfect 15-0 record and has faced little opposition inside the cage.

Cormier most recently choked out former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson at UFC 173 in May.

“Bones” is currently riding an 11-fight win streak and has generally walked through top-tier competition including Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Glover Teixeira.

Only Gustafsson has been able to provide a stiff test for the 26-year-old champion up to this point.
