Former K-1 and Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem put the UFC’s 265-pound division on notice when he steamrolled ex-titleholder Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 and he is still aiming for a repeat performance.
Despite the fact that the bout was 32 months ago and completely one-sided, “The Demolition Man” wants a part two, based on his remarks with Sportskeeda.
"I do believe that Brock Lesnar will be coming back, I don't want to call it from retirement, but he is a huge draw, big guy, sells tickets. So that's a fight I would be interested in,” Overeem said.
Lesnar, who has since reverted back to a part-time main event attraction with the WWE, captured the UFC heavyweight title from Randy Couture at UFC 91 in November 2008.
The championship bout was just the fourth in the hulking heavyweight’s career, so it appeared like the sky was the limit for the new titleholder.
However, after avenging his only career loss to Frank Mir and scoring a stunning comeback against Shane Carwin, Lesnar lost the title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 in October 2010.
After his second bout with diverticulitis, a stomach disease that caused Lesnar to have a foot of his colon removed, he wasn’t the same fighter anymore and had nothing to offer a game Overeem.
Since the victory over Lesnar, “The Reem” suffered back-to-back knockout losses to Antonio Silva and Travis Browne before dominating Frank Mir at UFC 169 in February.
In the unlikely event that Lesnar did return to the Octagon, would a rematch with Overeem make sense?
