Alistair Overeem vs. Travis Browne Set for Inaugural UFC on FOX Sports 1 Card

Two hard-hitting heavyweights are set to close out the summer at the UFC’s first card on the FOX Sports 1 network.

Former Strikeforce/K1 champion Alistair Overeem is set to take on fringe contender Travis Browne at the August 31 event, which takes place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, MMA Junkie reported first on Wednesday.

After improving his undefeated streak to 12 bouts in a row with a decisive TKO victory over former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 141, “The Reem” was pegged to fight then champ Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 in May.

However, Overeem failed a pre-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone and was issued a nine-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Despite the indiscretion, “The Demolition Man” was again promised a shot at UFC gold if he could get past Strikeforce import Antonio Silva at UFC 156 in February.

After dominating the first two rounds, the hulking heavyweight got caught with his hands down as “Bigfoot” teed off on him with punches, earning the Brazilian “Knockout of the Night” honors.

Meanwhile, Browne was one of the hottest prospects in the heavyweight division heading into late 2012, boasting a 13-0-1 record.

However, like Overeem, he was unable to get passed the powerful punches of Silva, suffering the first TKO loss of his career at UFC on FX 5 in October.

In Browne’s defense, the bout looked competitive before the Greg Jackson’s MMA fighter tore his left hamstring in the first few minutes of the fight.

Browne bounced back in definitive fashion at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 Finale in April, knocking out resurgent veteran Gabriel Gonzaga with a series of brutal elbow strikes.

UFC President Dana White told MMA Junkie that Overeem vs. Browne will be on the main card of UFC on FOX Sports 1: 1, but will not serve as the main event.

Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva has been the rumored headlining bout for the card for weeks now, but UFC officials remain mum on whether or not the grudge match will happen.
