Anderson Silva: GSP Had a Chance to Fight Me and He Turned it Down

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre said Chris Weidman would finish middleweight champ Anderson Silva back in March.

Based on a UFC 162 media conference call on Tuesday, “The Spider” took the French-Canadian’s endorsement of Weidman personally (via MMA Mania).

“St. Pierre had his chance to pronounce himself fighting me and he chose not to do it. That's what he chose to say,” Silva said on the call.

Silva and GSP have been linked to a superfight since 2009, but the fight has never materialized since neither fighter was particularly interested in taking out a fellow UFC titleholder.

St-Pierre has won 11 fights in a row, including a UFC welterweight record of eight successful title defenses.

Conversely, Silva is a perfect 16-0 inside the Octagon and boasts the UFC’s 185-pound record of 10 title defenses in a row.

Silva has opened up about the idea of fighting “Rush” ever since he defeated his rival Chael Sonnen at UFC 148 in July, though he has never flat out called out GSP to fight him.

Also worth mentioning is that St-Pierre and Weidman are occasional training partners at Renzo Gracie’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in New York City, so the 170-pound champ’s opinion is not unbiased.

Weidman and Silva finally settle their score at UFC 162 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 6.
