The UFC fined their middleweight champion Anderson Silva a hefty $50,000 for no showing a scheduled media appearance in Las Angeles, California, on Monday.
However, when speaking to Brazilian media outlet Vega.com on Tuesday, “The Spider” indicated that he wasn’t aware of any commitment to a media event.
"I never missed any commitment with the UFC. I would never book a trip to Brazil if I knew I should be in Los Angeles," Silva said.
"Everybody knows that I always block my media schedule to dedicate myself to the training sessions, because it's my priority. I'm an athlete and my focus will always be to train and be prepared for the challenges."
The event was set aside to hype up Silva’s upcoming title defense against Chris Weidman, set for UFC 162, which is scheduled for July 6 and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to USA Today, the event was supposed to allow various Los Angeles- based media outlets to ask the champion questions at a luncheon.
Silva and his camp initially declined to comment on the matter, but decided to open up on the matter roughly 24 hours later.
The Brazilian enters the tile match up with a perfect 16-0 record inside the Octagon and also holds the UFC record with 10 successful title defenses.
Weidman, a former All-American wrestler with a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, possesses the grappling chops that have given the champion a little difficulty in the past.
Still, Silva has not suffered a legitimate loss since all the way back in December 2004 when he was caught with a Hail Mary submission by Ryo Chonon inside the PRIDE ring.
