Anderson Silva’s Camp Willing to Fight Jon Jones at 190-Pound Catchweight

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has at least temporarily given up hope on a superfight with 170-pound top dog Georges St-Pierre in favor of a dream match up with light heavyweight title holder Jon Jones.

However, “The Spider” is only willing to do the bout if “Bones” is willing to make a serious weight cut and meet at a catchweight of 190-pounds.

Brazil’s Globo TV broke the story on Tuesday, with Middle Easy providing the English translation.

“Brazil’s SportTV talked to Anderson Silva’s agent, Jorge Guimaraes and he said although nothing is confirmed, Silva vs. Jones is on the horizon,” the Middle Easy report says.

“Anderson Silva also believes the fight shouldn't be for the belt (hence the catchweight). Jorge also confirmed that Anderson Silva will defend his title this Summer and a Jones/Silva superfight could happen later in the year, preferably in New York and only at a catchweight of 87kgs (which comes out to about 190 lbs).”

Various media outlets have recently reported that Silva is in talked to defend his 185-pound strap against rising star Chris Weidman at the UFC’s July pay-per-view, so Guimaraes basically confirms that here.

Additionally, it appears that Silva’s camp is opportunistic that the long-awaited moment where mixed martial arts is sanctioned in New York will occur before the end of the year, a sentiment the UFC brass has shared.

The biggest snag here is the fact that Silva wants to fight Jones at 190-pounds, just five pounds over the middleweight limit and a whopping 15 pounds under the light heavyweight limit.

Of course, this is likely just a negotiation tactic as it seems unfathomable that Jones’ camp would accept the blockbuster fight at such a low weight.

Jones next defends his belt against Silva’s old nemesis, Chael Sonnen, at UFC 159 in April, so a definitive victory for the 25-year-old would bring us one step closer to Silva vs. Jones.
