Anthony Pettis: Move to Featherweight Division is Only Temporary

Former WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis will challenge UFC featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo for his belt at UFC 163 in August, but he claims the drop to 145-pounds will not last long.

“I was tired of waiting for a 155 pound title shot,” Pettis told The New York Post.

“It’s not a permanent weight cut (to featherweight),” Pettis admits. “But a striker like myself and Aldo, it doesn’t really matter what weight class it happens at. It’s going to be fireworks either way.”

The innovative Roufusport striker was expected to get an immediate title shot after coming to the UFC in the summer of 2011, but instead his promotional debut was spoiled by grinding wrestler Clay Guida.

“Showtime” has rebounded with three straight wins since then though, including back-to-back knockouts over perennial contenders Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone.

Pettis is the last man to defeat current UFC lightweight title holder Benson Henderson, winning a close unanimous decision that won him the WEC strap as well as the “Fight of the Year” honors for 2010.

Aldo is no easy task though, as the Brazilian, currently ranked number 4 on the UFC’s official pound-for-pound rankings, is current a winner of 15 straight bouts.

Between his WEC and UFC appearances, “Scarface” has also successfully defended his belt six times.

Still, it would appear that none of that matters to Pettis.

“It’s impossible to find a training partner exactly like Jose Aldo, otherwise they would be champ too,” Pettis said. “But the same goes for me. I don’t think Aldo can find a training partner that could emulate my style.”

Will Pettis be able to pull off the upset this summer or will Aldo show him that switching weight classes on a whim was a big mistake?
