Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Out of UFC 161 Bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

UFC fans pining for a hard-hitting PRIDE rematch this upcoming weekend are in for a huge disappointment.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been forced out of the UFC 161 co-main event against Mauricio Rua on Saturday due to a back injury. Brazilian media outlet Globo first reported the news and MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani later confirmed the report.

“Lil’ Nog” and “Shogun” first faced off in June 2005, having a back-and-forth slugfest in the PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal. Rua ended up getting his hand raised, winning a close unanimous decision.

After winning seven straight bouts, Nogueira appeared to be on the decline after suffering consecutive losses to Ryan Bader and Phil Davis, but has since bounced back with wins over former champions in Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans.

Meanwhile, Rua has just a 5-5 record since coming over to the UFC, most recently dropping a fairly lop-sided unanimous decision to surging contender Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 5 in December.

According to Helwani, UFC officials are searching for a replacement to face Rua at the event. However, considering UFC 161 takes place in less than two weeks on June 15, it is quite possible a suitable replacement will not be available in time.

UFC 161 appears to be cursed recently, as the original main event was set to be an interim bantamweight title bout between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland.

Unfortunately, Barao suffered a foot injury late last month and was forced to pull out of the event and Wineland followed suit, hoping he would get a title shot in the future.

To compensate, Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans headlines the bout and a heavyweight clash between Roy Nelson and Stipe Miocic was added to the card.
