Bellator Champ Ben Askren: I’m Not Retiring Until I ‘Beat Up GSP’

Undefeated Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren is in fight purgatory as he awaits a new contract offer from either his current employer of the UFC.

Askren has defended his title four times, including back-to-back TKO stoppages over Karl Ammousou and Andrey Koreshkov this year.

However, his Roufusport teammate/UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis recently stated that this whole contract negotiation debacle had the “Funky” one seriously considering retirement.

The former Olympic-level wrestler cleared up any misconceptions with a tweet he posted Thursday night.

“Not retiring yet, still 1 person I want to beat up. @GeorgesStPierre @ufc @danawhite,” he wrote.

He then began to tear into the UFC welterweight champion, who is regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the sport despite no background in grappling before he started training MMA.

“Once I figured out GSPs dark place didn't really exist I knew he would be easy prey!” one tweet says. “Seriously though GSP in 2009 prob would have beat me, but this current version fights way too scared!” another reads.

St-Pierre is of course no slouch inside the cage, boasting a rock solid 11-fight win streak and already avenging his only two career losses to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.

GSP looks to make it nine title defenses in a row when he fights heavy-handed wrestler Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 on November 16.

All the while, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney hinted that contract negotiations with Askren may be over soon.

“@JMENCINAS Just touched base with MMA's greatest wrestler @Benaskren yesterday. Probably have some news soon,” he tweeted.

Will Askren remain a Bellator mainstay or enter the deep waters of the UFC’s talent-rich welterweight division?
