Former Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren is awfully salty about not getting his shot inside the Octagon and he isn’t shy about elaborating on the matter.
In an interview with MMA Junkie, “Funky” revealed that he was never given a formal reason why the UFC opted not to retain his services and he is disappointed he has to wait and prove he is the best in the world.
“It is their business, and they can run their business however they want to run their business. But it would have been nice to hear from their mouth what the real issue was. I have a pretty good idea of what it is, but they still didn’t spit it out,” Askren recalled.
“In all honesty, I think if you put a 15-man tournament together, I think I could be the best fighter in the world right now. And now, I’m not going to get a chance to prove that because one bald-headed fat man chooses not to let me in.”
After Bellator announced they would not re-sign Askren last month after his contract had expired, it was implied the UFC would be adding the known name to their roster.
However, that never came to be, with White outright stating he wasn’t interested in signing Askren at the moment.
After weighing offers from the World Series of Fighting and ONE FC, Askren opted to go with a two-year, six fight deal with ONE FC which he says could net him just under $1 million.
The former Olympic-level wrestler has been heavily criticized for his smothering style inside the cage, recording six straight decision victories between May 2010 and April 2012.
Despite recently notching back-to-back TKO victories over Karl Ammoussou and Andrey Koreshkov, Askren remains pegged as a “boring wrestler” by many pundits.
Will Askren ever get his chance to showcase his talents inside the Octagon or is the Roufusport standout doomed to compete in second-tier promotions for the entirety of his fight career?
