Brian Bowles Pops for Elevated Levels of Testosterone in Post-UFC 160 Drug Test

Former WEC bantamweight champion Brian Bowles has failed his UFC 160 post-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone and has already been handed a temporary suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, according to MMA Junkie.

NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer indicated that Bowles' drug test showed a testosterone to epitestosterone ratio of 20-to-1. The NSAC allows fighters to have a T/E ratio of up to 6-to-1.

Additionally, Bowles did not apply for a TRT-exemption for the event, Kizer said. Furthermore, all 24 competitors on the card were drug tested after the event and no one else failed, the report says.

For the sake of comparision, when three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen failed a drug test for elevated levels of testosterone in 2010, his T/E ratio was 16.9-to-1.

Even more recently, former Strikeforce/K-1 champ Alistair Overeem had a T/E ratio of 14-to-1 when he failed a drug test in April 2012.

As of late Friday evening, Bowles declined to speak with various MMA outlets about the situation and has not updated his Twitter page since a few hours before his fight with George Roop on May 25.

Bowles came up short against Roop at the Memorial Day Weekend pay-per-view event, losing via second round TKO.

The career bantamweight had been on the shelf for 18 months due to various injuries after getting submitted by another former WEC title holder in Urijah Faber. That bout took place at UFC 139 in November 2011.

The 32-year-old made his professional MMA debut in May 2006, rattling off seven straight wins before shocking the world by knocking out then pound-for-pound great Miguel Torres to capture the WEC’s 135-pound strap.

Since then, Bowles has seen his career take a turn for the worse, going 2-3 in his five fights since, getting finished in all three of his losses.

Following a crushing defeat and a failed drug test, it seems hard to envision a scenario where the UFC doesn’t give Bowles his walking papers.
