Brian Stann: Loose UFC Drug Testing Contributed to my Retirement

Former UFC middleweight contender Brian Stann has been retired from the sport for a little over nine months and opened up as to the reasons why in a recent interview with FOX Sports.

"It was a major part of me walking away from the sport," Stann said regarding the UFC’s drug testing policies. "Knowing that I wasn't getting a fair shake played a big part, for sure."

"If all you're doing is testing night of the fight, [fighters] got to be stupid to get caught … When that happens in MMA, not only is he stealing from his opponent, you can be hurting them. You could be shortening their career."

Stann, a former WEC light heavyweight champion, retired at the young age of 32 in July, a few months removed from a knockout loss to Wanderlei Silva at UFC on FUEL 8 last March.

The loss was “The All-American’s” third in his past four fights, decisively removing him from any sort of contenders list at 185 pounds.

The former Greg Jackson’s MMA fighter, who was a decorated member of the U.S. Marines prior to getting his fight career going, retired with a 12-6 record (10 finishes) as a professional mixed martial artist.

Stann is currently an analyst for FOX Sports for both MMA and college football.

UFC President Dana White recently stated that beginning with UFC 172 this weekend, all fighters on the card will be drug tested, though the specific details of the process have not been revealed.

Does the UFC need to be cleaned up from a drug testing perspective or is Stann being overly dramatic?
